Grand Teton Weather: Forecast and Month-by-Month Averages

In shortGrand Teton's visitor areas sit on the floor of Jackson Hole at roughly 6,400-6,800 ft, beneath peaks that rise to 13,775 ft on the Grand Teton. The table is for Moose, near park headquarters: winters are long and very cold with heavy snow, and summers are short with warm days, cool nights and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. In the mountains, snow often lingers until mid-July.

Similar valley weather to Moose but right at the mountain base; trails usually stay snow-covered until late May and afternoon storms build quickly over the peaks.

Northern end of the park near Jackson Lake; often windier and slightly snowier than Moose, with services open roughly late May to late September.

Grand Teton in January

24°F / 2°F. The coldest, snowiest month on the valley floor, with highs in the mid-20s and lows near 0°F at Moose. The Teton Park Road is closed to cars between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge and is groomed for skiing and snowshoeing.

Grand Teton in February

28°F / 7°F. Still deep winter, with sunny days between storms and very cold nights. US 89/191 stays plowed from Jackson to Flagg Ranch; the groomed Teton Park Road is popular for skiing.

Grand Teton in March

38°F / 15°F. Snow still covers the valley and mountains. Grooming on the Teton Park Road usually ends in mid-March, and roads can close briefly during blizzards.

Grand Teton in April

47°F / 24°F. Mild days alternate with rain and snow. After snowmelt, the closed section of the Teton Park Road opens to biking, walking and rollerblading until it reopens to cars on May 1.

Grand Teton in May

60°F / 32°F. The Teton Park Road usually reopens to vehicles May 1 and the Moose-Wilson Road around mid-May, depending on conditions. Valley trails are usually snow-covered until late May.

Grand Teton in June

69°F / 37°F. Highs near 70°F but nights still in the upper 30s; snow lingers on high trails and passes. Wildflowers and runoff peak, and visitor services are fully open.

Grand Teton in July

79°F / 43°F. The warmest and driest month at Moose (highs near 79°F), but afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, hail and rain are frequent, especially in the mountains. High-country snow usually melts out by mid-July.

Grand Teton in August

78°F / 40°F. Warm days, cool nights and afternoon storms continue; wildfire smoke can cause hazy views. Busy season, with the best access to high trails.

Grand Teton in September

68°F / 35°F. Sunny days and cold nights, with lows in the mid-30s and early snow possible on the peaks. Fall color and elk rut draw visitors; some services begin closing late in the month.

Grand Teton in October

53°F / 25°F. Cold nights and occasional snowstorms; highs around 53°F at Moose. Most lodging and services close, and secondary roads may close based on conditions.

Grand Teton in November

36°F / 15°F. Winter returns, with frequent snow. The Teton Park Road closes to cars on November 1 between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge, and the Moose-Wilson Road closes the same day.

Grand Teton in December

25°F / 3°F. Very cold and snowy, with lows near 0°F. Grooming of the Teton Park Road for skiing and snowshoeing usually begins in mid-December; winter tires and chains are recommended.

Weather hazards to plan for

  • Afternoon lightning, hail and heavy rain on exposed ridges, peaks and lakes, mainly in July and August.
  • Snowfields and ice on high trails into mid-July; slips on steep snow are a leading backcountry hazard.
  • Extreme winter cold, with average lows near 0°F at Moose in December and January and white-out conditions during storms.
  • Icy, snow-packed roads with wildlife (moose, elk, bison) on or near the road, especially at dawn and dusk in winter.
  • Avalanche danger in the mountains and canyons in winter and spring; check the Bridger-Teton avalanche forecast before backcountry travel.

October at Moose averages highs around 53°F and lows around 25°F, with sunny days alternating with rain and occasional snowstorms. Most lodging and services close during the month, so plan for cold mornings and limited facilities.

Does it snow in Grand Teton National Park?

Yes, heavily. Snow covers the valley from about December to mid-April, NPS reports roughly 170 inches a year at Moose, and snow often lingers in the mountains until mid-July.

When is thunderstorm season in Grand Teton?

July and August bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, rain and hail, especially in the mountains. Start hikes early and be off summits and exposed ridges by early afternoon.

How cold does it get at night in Grand Teton in summer?

Even in July, average lows at Moose are about 43°F, and June and September nights average in the mid-to-upper 30s. Pack warm layers for evenings and early starts.

What is the best month for weather in Grand Teton?
