Best Time to Visit Glacier National Park
Updated October 2026. Checked against NPS.gov. Conditions change, so confirm on the official alerts page before you go.
Short answerThe best time to visit Glacier National Park is mid-July to mid-September, when the full Going-to-the-Sun Road is open and most high trails are free of snow. Early September is the sweet spot for smaller crowds with nearly everything still open. Before late June and after mid-October, the road over Logan Pass is closed and much of the park is reachable only on foot or skis.

Why timing matters so much at Glacier
Glacier's season is short. The park is open 24 hours a day all year, but Going-to-the-Sun Road, the 50-mile route over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (6,646 feet), is fully open for only about three to four months. Snowplow crews begin clearing it in early April, and the alpine section usually opens to cars sometime between mid-June and mid-July.
Opening day depends on snowpack, avalanche risk and road work. The full road opened on June 22 in 2026, June 16 in 2025 and June 22 in 2024. Over 2010 to 2022 it ranged from June 16 to July 13, so if your trip is in late June, have a backup plan for the east and west ends of the park.
Most lodges, stores and in-park services run from late May through September. Visitor centers close in late September and early October.
Glacier weather by month
The numbers below are NOAA 1991-2020 averages for West Glacier, at about 3,200 feet near the west entrance. NPS notes that Logan Pass and other high areas are generally 10 to 15°F cooler, and the east side is often windy, with gusts of 50 mph or more.

Spring (April to mid-June)
Spring at Glacier looks like winter at higher elevations. The average snowpack reaches about 16 feet in the mountains, and Going-to-the-Sun Road stays closed to cars beyond Lake McDonald Lodge or Avalanche Creek on the west side while plowing continues.
This is hiker-and-biker season. From roughly early May until the full opening, sections of the plowed road are often open to people on foot or bicycle only, which is a quiet way to see Lake McDonald valley and the cliffs above it. Access points shift with plowing progress, so check the park's road status page the day you go.
Expect cool, wet weather, muddy low-elevation trails and closed high trails. Waterfalls are at their strongest in late May and June. Services in Many Glacier and Two Medicine generally start later than on the west side, so check what is open before you drive over.
- Good for: low-elevation walks, Lake McDonald, biking the closed road, waterfalls
- Not good for: Logan Pass, the Highline Trail, most high-country hikes
Summer (late June to early September)
July and August are peak season. The full Going-to-the-Sun Road is open, boat tours and campgrounds are running, and wildflowers fill the meadows around Logan Pass in July. Daytime highs in West Glacier average about 80°F, with cool nights, and the west side can top 90°F.
Snow lingers longer than many visitors expect. When the road opened on June 22, 2026, the Highline Trail from Logan Pass was still closed for snow. High trails usually clear in stages through July.
Crowds are the main drawback. Parking at Logan Pass, Avalanche Creek and Many Glacier often fills by mid-morning. In 2026 the park did not require vehicle reservations, but it limited Logan Pass parking to three hours from July 1 through Labor Day and ran a ticketed shuttle to the pass. NPS also warned of waits of up to 30 minutes at the West Glacier entrance at peak times. Start before 7 a.m. if you want to drive and park without stress.
Wildfire smoke season (late July to early September)
Wildfire smoke is the wild card in late summer. Fires in Montana, Idaho, Washington and British Columbia can fill the valleys with haze for days at a time, usually from late July into early September. Smoke can hide the peaks, affect air quality on strenuous hikes and occasionally close roads and trails.
Fires inside the park have caused major closures before. The Reynolds Creek Fire in July 2015 closed part of the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road, and the Howe Ridge Fire in August 2018 burned along Lake McDonald and closed sections of the road and nearby lodging.
You can't predict smoke months ahead. If you are booking for August, keep plans flexible, check the park's alerts page and an air quality map before each day, and consider a backup day at the end of your trip.
Fall (September to mid-October)
September is the best month for many travelers. Crowds drop after Labor Day, the Logan Pass parking limit and shuttle system end, bugs fade and the weather is often clear and crisp. Average highs in West Glacier fall from about 68°F in September to 52°F in October.
Services shrink quickly. Most lodges and stores close in late September, and visitor centers close in late September and early October. Early snowstorms can close the alpine section of the road for a day or more at any point in September.
Fall color comes in two waves. Aspen and cottonwood turn yellow in mid to late September, and the western larch, a conifer that turns gold and drops its needles, usually peaks in early to mid-October on the west side and in the North Fork area.
Going-to-the-Sun Road usually stays fully open until the third Monday in October, weather permitting. For 2026 that would be October 19, but an early storm or road work can end the season sooner. Between 2010 and 2022, recorded closing dates for the full road ranged from September 3 (2017, when the Sprague Fire closed the west side) to October 18.
Winter (November to March)
Winter is quiet and snowy. Going-to-the-Sun Road is plowed and open year-round from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge, weather permitting. Beyond that point it is unplowed and becomes a popular route for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Most other park roads are closed to vehicles, and Many Glacier Road usually closes the third weekend of November.
Apgar Visitor Center is open on weekends in winter, and rangers lead snowshoe walks on weekends. St. Mary and Logan Pass visitor centers are closed. Primitive camping is available at Apgar and St. Mary campgrounds, but there is no in-park lodging.
The winter entrance fee is lower: $25 per private vehicle from November 1 through April 30, compared with $35 in summer. The park does not accept cash. Bring chains or good snow tires and check road conditions before driving from Kalispell or Whitefish.
Which month should you pick?
Choose based on what you want most from the trip.
- Mid-July to mid-August: best odds of every road and trail being open, plus peak wildflowers. Busiest, and smoke is possible.
- First half of September: the best overall balance of open roads, fewer people and stable weather, though some services start closing.
- Late June: the full road may or may not be open yet, and high trails are still snowy. Good if you're flexible.
- Early October: larch color and empty trails, but limited services and a real chance of snow closing Logan Pass.
- May and early June: biking or walking the car-free road, waterfalls and low-elevation hikes only.
- November to April: skiing, snowshoeing and solitude around Lake McDonald.
Common questions
When does Going-to-the-Sun Road fully open?
Usually between mid-June and mid-July, depending on snow. In 2026 it opened on June 22, and in 2025 it opened on June 16. NPS posts the opening once plowing is done, not on a fixed date.
When does Going-to-the-Sun Road close for the season?
It usually stays fully open until the third Monday in October, weather permitting, which is October 19 in 2026. Snow can close the alpine section earlier, and the lower west side to Lake McDonald Lodge stays open all winter.
Is September a good time to visit Glacier?
Yes. Early September usually has the full road open, fewer crowds after Labor Day and cool, clear weather. Some lodges and services close by late September, and early snow is possible.
Do I need a reservation to visit Glacier in 2027?
The park hasn't announced its 2027 summer plans yet. In 2026 it dropped vehicle reservations and used a three-hour Logan Pass parking limit and a ticketed shuttle instead. NPS announced the 2026 plan in mid-February, so watch for 2027 news in late winter.
How bad is wildfire smoke at Glacier?
It varies a lot from year to year. Haze is most likely from late July into early September and can last days. Check air quality and the park's alerts page before each day, and keep August plans flexible.
