Best Time to Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Updated October 2026. Checked against NPS.gov. Conditions change, so confirm on the official alerts page before you go.

Short answerThe best times to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park are mid-April to mid-May, for wildflowers and mild weather, and mid-October to early November, when fall color reaches the lower slopes. Summer is hot, humid and crowded, and October is the park's busiest month, so arrive before 8 a.m. on peak days. Winter is quiet and cheap but Kuwohi Road closes and Newfound Gap Road can shut for snow and ice.

Quick answer by season

Spring (April and May) is the pick for most first-time visitors. Wildflowers peak at low elevations in mid- to late April, seasonal roads reopen in April, and highs in Gatlinburg run in the 70s.

Fall is the most popular season. Color starts on the high peaks in mid-September and usually peaks at middle and lower elevations from mid-October to early November. Expect heavy traffic, especially on weekends.

Summer brings long days, rhododendron blooms and afternoon thunderstorms, plus the biggest family crowds. Winter is the quietest time, with some roads closed and the chance of snow at higher elevations.

Weather and elevation

Elevations in the park range from about 875 feet to 6,643 feet at Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), and the NPS says temperatures can differ by 10 to 20°F between the base of the mountains and the summits. The table above uses NPS averages for Gatlinburg, at the low end, and for Kuwohi, the highest point.

The Smokies are wet in every season. Kuwohi averages 5 to 8 inches of precipitation in most months, and July is the wettest month at both stations. September and October are the driest months, which is one more reason fall is so popular. Pack a rain jacket no matter when you go.

Spring (March to May)

Spring changes fast. The NPS notes that sunny skies can turn to snow flurries within a few hours in March, and snow is still possible on the high peaks into April. By mid-April the low elevations are reliably mild.

Wildflowers are the main draw. The NPS says the spring bloom usually peaks in mid- to late April at lower elevations and a few weeks later on the highest peaks. Look for trilliums (the park has ten species), lady slipper orchids, violets and bleeding heart. Flame azaleas bloom at lower elevations in April and May, and mountain laurel blooms from early May through June.

Most seasonal roads reopen in spring. The 2026 schedule opened Kuwohi Road on April 1, Little Greenbrier Road on April 3, Rich Mountain Road on April 10, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail on April 17 and Parson Branch Road on May 1.

Synchronous fireflies (late May to June)

Photinus carolinus, the synchronous firefly, flashes in unison for a short window each year near Elkmont. The NPS says recorded peak dates since 1993 have ranged from the third week of May to the third week of June, so the timing shifts with the weather.

Viewing at Elkmont is by lottery on Recreation.gov. In 2026 the viewing dates were May 20 to 27, the lottery ran April 24 to 27, entry cost $1, and winners paid a $29 reservation fee. Each reservation covers one vehicle with up to seven people, and the park issued 120 reservations per night. Elkmont is closed at night during the event to everyone except reservation holders and registered campers on foot.

Dates for 2027 have not been announced. In recent years the park has released dates and opened the lottery in April, so check the NPS firefly page in early spring.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is green, humid and busy. Highs in Gatlinburg reach the upper 80s and can hit the 90s, while Kuwohi stays in the low to mid 60s. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so start hikes early and plan to be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.

Rhododendrons peak in June. The NPS says Catawba rhododendron peaks in June above 3,500 feet, and rosebay rhododendron blooms at lower elevations in June and at mid-elevations in July. Flame azaleas on Gregory Bald usually peak in late June or early July.

Crowds are heavy from June through August. The NPS says visitation typically peaks between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and recommends entering the park by 8 a.m. at the busiest times, earlier for popular trailheads. On Wednesdays from May 6 to September 30, 2026, Cades Cove Loop Road was closed to motor vehicles so people could walk and bike it.

Fall color by elevation (September to early November)

Fall color moves downhill. Color on the high peaks can begin as early as mid-September, and middle and lower elevations usually peak between mid-October and early November. The NPS FAQ narrows it further: the last three weeks of October are typically the best time to see color.

If you can only come once, aim for the second half of October and plan to change elevation. Early in the season, drive up toward Newfound Gap or Kuwohi to find color. Later, look in the lower valleys around Cades Cove, Greenbrier and Oconaluftee.

October is the busiest month of the year in the park. Cades Cove Loop Road and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail back up badly on weekends. The NPS suggests quieter options such as Lakeview Drive near Bryson City and the Foothills Parkway, plus lower-traffic hikes like Porters Creek, Oconaluftee River Trail and Little River Trail. Buy your parking tag before you arrive and have a backup plan in case your first trailhead is full.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is the least crowded season. About half of winter days top 50°F at low elevations, but the high country gets real snow: Kuwohi averages 18 to 26 inches a month from January through March. Snow is most likely in January and February.

Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) is closed to cars in winter. In 2026 it is scheduled to stay open through November 29. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and Little Greenbrier Road also close November 29, and Rich Mountain and Parson Branch roads close November 9.

Newfound Gap Road (US 441), the main road across the park between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, is open year-round but closes when snow and ice make it unsafe. Closures can come with little warning, so check the park's alerts page or call (865) 436-1200 before you cross. Cades Cove Loop Road and Cataloochee Road stay open all year, weather permitting.

Tips for any season

  • There is no entrance fee, but you need a parking tag ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual) to park anywhere in the park for more than 15 minutes.
  • Arrive before 8 a.m. on summer and October weekends to get trailhead parking.
  • Check the NPS seasonal road schedule before planning a drive on Kuwohi Road, Roaring Fork or Parson Branch Road.
  • Laurel Falls Trail has been closed for rehabilitation since January 2025, so plan a different waterfall hike.
  • Pack rain gear and layers; it can be 15°F cooler at Kuwohi than in Gatlinburg.
